---[ . . . . 2021-04-21 preface . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ]--- This file was created mid-2018, and, by and large, progress was made through the following year. You'll find many TODOs and incomplete notes, though a majority of bestiary data is present. Rather than address these once and for all, I feel it's more interesting to release the document as-is, a time capsule of where the project went and eventually stopped as time and interest faded. This guide remains a work of love; I hope you'll enjoy exploring it as you (re)visit Grandia 3. ---[ . . . . ~ Q.N. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ]--- /------+ /------+ |/----- |//--- Grandia III Bestiary /---\||| |/*-\||| \---/III ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Table of contents: TODO: This, obviously. (If you make a print copy derived from this, show me! :) ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --+ Non-standard glossary & notes +---------------------------------- Various terms that aren't actually found in Grandia III but are used in debug mode, or have otherwise obscure-ish meanings, and some extra notes. Gold: Sometimes gold values will be marked with a "~". That means that the enemy is always encountered alongside specific other enemies - almost always in a boss battle. That means I can't easily math out how much gold an enemy has.. ALTHOUGH, presumably using aerial kills will make it possible to check how much gold they have anyways; but that's a project for another time. MGP: Known in the game as "MAG"; magic power. MGR: Known in the game as "RES"; magic resistance. ACT: Known in the game as "INI"; the speed at which a character proceeds along the IP gauge. Sway WT: Sway weight, or the chance of dodging. 1.00 is 100%, 0.50 is 50%. INT: On page 4; the likelyhood of using Auto-Cancel. All on page 3.... Elemental Resistances: "Fire", "Earth", etc, are all damage resistances. Success Resistances: The FIRST section of "Sleep", "Para", etc, are all the (multiplier for the) likelyhood of an effect being successful. Duration Resistances: The SECOND section of "Sleep", "Para", etc, are all multipliers for how long an effect lasts, if it's sucessfully applied. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .___________________________. | 0x100: Lv. 14 Pico Alpha | +---------------------------+---------------------------------------------+ | HP: 360, MP: 48, SP: 48 ... He leveled up! This is the second encounter with Kornell, | | just outside the Anfog Woods camp, and it's a whole different battle | | this time around. | | | | Starting from this encounter, Kornell weilds an Iron Fist (0x4200). | | This is sort of an appendage of him; taking out Kornell will also get | | rid of the Iron Fist (but not the other way around). Kornell is also | | accompanied by two Henchmen (0x4001). These are pretty easy to defeat, | | and you have to kill them even if you knock out Kornell first. | | | | A quick note on the gold drops of this fight -- both Kornell and Iron | | Fist have their gold drop listed as 200 in this bestiary, and these are | | accurate, but don't work entirely the way you'd expect. Essentially, | | defeating either Iron Fist or Kornell will add 200G to the amount of | | gold you'll get at the end of the battle (or 250G with an aerial | | finish), but - if you killed the Iron Fist first, Kornell's gold drop | | won't count at all. (Likewise, the Iron Fist's gold won't be counted if | | you kill Kornell first, but this is less easy to notice, since killing | | Kornell immediately takes out the Iron Fist.) So, if you do an aerial | | finish on the Iron Fist, don't bother also doing an aerial finish on | | Kornell; the 250G you'd normally get from aerial-finishing him won't | | count. (Also, the Henchmen each drop 100G. Usually you'll get a total | | of 400G from this fight - 100G + 100G + 200G - and you can get a max of | | 500G - 125G + 125G + 250G.) | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ._________________________. | 0x4102: Lv. 28 Kornell | +-------------------------+-----------------------------------------------+ | HP: 9600, MP: 0, SP: 360 ... Fought in Baccula Ruins, alongside | | his Iron Fist (0x4201), Violetta (0x4801), and her own personal weapon, | | the Demon Scythe (0x4801). | | | Thankfully, gold drops make sense this time around. The weapons don't | | drop any gold themselves, and whether or not you aerial-finish them has | | no impact on the gold you get from the battle. Kornell's gold is simply | | 1200G, unless you aerial-finish him, in which case his gold follows the | | general aerial-finish rule -- 1.25x, or 1500G. Violetta's gold drops | | work the same way (1800G, or 2250G with an aerial finish). | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ TODO: For the future, when I go into the skills that enemies can use -- See this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L69ziiVabYY at 39:13. Other status effects | | last 0.1x as long as normal. | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Fought in Melc Ruins (Entrance). This is everyone's favorite boss. | | Or least favorite. Have fun! | | | | This is the "main" part of the boss. Even though it has stats, you only | | fight Melc Crystals A through C in battle; this part just contains the | | experience (and presumably gold) dropped. | | | | The Melc Crystal is defeated once you exhaust the HP of each of its | | three individual crystals, and the battle yields a total of 15000 XP | | and 4000G. Melc Crystal A has a move called Cluster Change that swaps | | the entire set of (live) crystals between two layouts. The first one, | | which the battle always starts in, is mostly focused on dealing damage | | with magic spells; the other gives parts of the Melc Crystal a colossal | | ACT boost and focuses on using mostly special moves. | | | | Technically, there are six significant targets in this battle: | | The first three, 0x6900, 0x6A00, and 0x6B00, are Melc Crystal A, B, and | | C, respectively, in their initial cluster. When the Melc Crystal uses | | Cluster Change, those three targets disappear, and 0x6910, 0x6A10, and | | 0x6B10 appear in their place. (Of course, it goes the other way around | | when the Crystal changes back to its initial form.) The HP, MP, and SP | | values of the original variants are then copied over to each of the new | | ones; if you've brought B down to 12000 HP and killed C, then B will | | still have that much HP and C will still be dead. | +-------------------------------------------------------------------------+ TODO: This target is probably called "Body". It has a 'normal attack' of sorts, firing a laser at one of the party members. This can be dodged and countered, dealing damage to a foe called "Body", but not any of the individual lettered targets. Not sure if it equates to any of the others on the IP gauge. TODO: Looks like it's just counterattacks that land on Body. It doesn't have any moves of its own (Melc Crystal's normal attack is executed by the lettered targets.) TODO: Because counterattacks land on Body, Jolt Counter unfortunately does not have any use in this battle (besides maaaaaaybe IP mechanics I don't really know if Jolt Counter has side effects besides boosting the damage ratio more). TODO: Melc Crystal B(?) has Vanish (initial cluster). .___________________________________________. | 0x6810: Lv. 42 Melc Crystal (Cluster 2) | +-------------------------------------------+-----------------------------+ | HP: 32000, MP: 550, SP: 600 ... The God Slayer is the quirk of | | the fight; it immediately enters COM-ACT phase on the IP gauge, casts | | a devastating move that will almost always kill your whole party in a | | single go, and definitely cannot be killed. The thing is, it moves | | extremely slowly along that part of the IP gauge, and you can cancel | | its move. Once you cancel Godkiller (and you HAVE to cancel it, or | | it'll definitely kill you), the God Slayer will go right back to COM | | and start casting Godkiller again. So essentially, you can't forget | | about the God Slayer, or else it'll charge up and take out your whole | | party as soon as it gets a chance. | | | | It's not technically impossible to survive Godkiller; you basically | | need to understand and time Invincible Aura (or Crystal Wall) well. | | I won't go into a colossal tutorial on that here; there are several | | good videos that explain and demonstrate the technique online. Mana Eggs and Skill Books actually require that a character's Magic and Skill Levels be at least equal to the levels in the help for the item before they can equip it. Yuki can't equip an Ether Egg if his Magic Level is only two! (This isn't exactly secret or anything, but I never noticed.) - You can't unequip an item if you've already got nine other duplicates of that item in your inventory. If your inventory is full of Mars Boots, and you're wearing a pair of Mars Boots, you won't be able to take them off to put on anything else! - On the same note, if you try to extract magic from a Mana Egg but you already have 9 of one of the extracted spells, the game will warn you can't hold any more and that the spells will be destroyed if you continue. - There are five ways a battle can start: + The ordinary way, where you walk directly into an enemy. + Preemptive Strike - Your party's IP symbols start somewhat ahead of all enemies. Achieved by slashing an enemy on the field and starting the fight while it's dizzy. + "You're Surrounded!" - The enemy IP symbols start ahead of your party's. This happens when an enemy runs up and attacks you from behind (or your side). + First Strike - All your party's IP symbols start at COM (so you get to choose your entire party's actions right away). Achieved by chopping a mine-flower on the field, having it blow up an enemy, and then running into the enemy while it's dizzy. + Sneak Attack - All the ENEMIES' IP symbols start at COM (so they get to attack right away). This is very bad and you definitely never want it to happen to you. It's the inverse of First Strike - it happens when you get blown up by a mine-flower (that you struck!) and an enemy ambushes you while you're dizzy. Since those last two are dependent on mine-flowers, they basically only in Nautica Plains (Dig Site). - It would appear to be that characters can't dodge attacks while a move is "immediately pending". For example, suppose Yuki uses a PS-rated Aerial Slash while a Madai uses Burnstrike on Alfina. Alfina, who is equipped with Perception (a Tech-skill that increases dodge rate) and a top-level Technique skill book, would normally be able to dodge most of the hits from Burnstrike, but *nobody* in the battle is allowed to move while Aerial Slash is pending (Yuki's IP icon is right at ACT!), so she doesn't dodge anything! - It's definitely possible to tell enemy weaknesses in-game visually: If an enemy is *weak* to the element of an attack it's hit by, a little check mark will show up beside the number. If the enemy is *resistant* to the element, the number will flip over itself. - The chest in the Melc Ruins that runs away from you isn't exactly real. There's always a Mimic enemy sitting at the back of the room, even if you space-jump over the chest in the northeast entrance room. If you walk from the hallway through the wall (before the chest has moved back), you can get to the chest, but if you try to open it, nothing will happen. And as soon as the animation of the chest wall moving back plays, the chest itself disappears. - The Excise Omega can use Auto-Cancel *even when* you just learned a secret method. The secret method will still be learned, though. - Enemies regenerate SP, too! If an enemy totally runs out of SP (and MP), it'll be forced to use normal attacks (i.e. combos) exclusively. However, this regenerates SP, just like your own heroes using combos does; an enemy will use a special move again once it has enough SP. - Excellent wins (where you don't take any damage at all) seem to have a different gold formula than normal wins. I have no idea how it works, but gold drops don't seem to be consistent across excellent wins. - The Clamorous Nun talks about Emelious's tutor, who apparently disappeared at the same time as him, but was one to just come and go as he pleased. (South of the viewing room, by the ring in the hall.) Could this tutor be Grau? - Whether or not a Critical hit knocks an enemy into the air seems to depend on how close the enemy is to ACT on the IP gauge, especially for large enemies such as Minotaurs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
